Kinect Star Wars News

Now that Star Wars: The Old Republic has begun its early access, motion gaming fans are wondering where the much ballyhooed Kinect Star Wars is. Well, the latest rumor out that Microsoft will not confirm or deny is that we are looking at April at this point. The game, along with the Xbox 360 Star Wars bundle, was delayed from its previous released time of Christmas 2011, right about now actually. The extra time was requested by developers who did not feel the game was polished enough after previewers slammed a few of its key elements and the way it handled. Since that announcement, we haven’t really heard a whole lot about it, but perhaps that news will pick up after the holidays when things calm down.
BTW, there was an interesting submission to the ratings board for Kinect Star Wars that will either add to the intrigue and anticipation or create another dread moment of the game (like when we saw the Rancor playing Godzilla on the unsuspecting desert folk). Yes, I’m talking about the mini-game that involves dancing. Nooooooooo! Someone at Lucas thought that it would be cool to actually include a dancing portion, because isn’t that pretty much a requirement these days of a Kinect game? I’m surprised Rise of Nightmares didn’t have people doing the Monster Mash halfway through.

Anyway, the submission said that there will be female characters performing suggestive moves in their scantily clad outfits. Now the only place I can think of that happens is in Return of the Jedi, which means that you’ll have to dance for Jabba? Will it be Princess Leia in her slave outfit? That might at least be a little cool. But that begs the question of whether we have to do the suggestive moves to be able to get through a certain level? Might be fun watching the girlfriend gyrate around in a slinky outfit while playing, but Uncle Joe, not so much. I can see wanting to include as much Star Wars immersion as possible, but in all the time I’ve ever seen the movies, I’ve never once felt the urge to get up and start gyrating my hips. Maybe that’s just me.
At this point, I’m starting to wonder if the game is going to wind up more like Kinect Adventures, a disjointed group of mini-games that are designed to show off the Kinect’s abilities, than as a comprehensive title. What other gems can we expect? Is there going to be one where I can throw darts at Emperor Palpatine, run in place at the Cloud City Gym with Chewbacca as my workout coach or perhaps I’ll get to roll around on the ground with an Ewok (ala Kinectimals). When I saw and played the preview they had where I got to fight off hordes of stupid attack droids with lightsabers and force push (two things I would have loved in Dead Island BTW), I had high hopes for this one despite the problems. But now I’m kind of disgusted.
I don’t know. What do you think? Are you looking forward to Kinect Star Wars still? Is dancing in Jabba’s hut a good thing? Let me know…
